Black Bear

Idaho has one of the most robust black bear populations in the lower 48 and offers one of the longest hunting seasons. Bears range in color from jet black to cinnamon to blonde, with color phases varying by region. The state estimates over 20,000 black bears, with particularly dense populations in the Clearwater and Salmon River drainages.

Habitat & Range

Black bears occupy forested habitats from the Panhandle to the central mountains. They are often found in areas with abundant berry crops (huckleberry, serviceberry) and near salmon spawning streams. In spring, they target south-facing slopes with early green-up.

Seasons & Tag Types

Idaho's spring bear season runs from April 15 through June 30 in most units (check regulations for specific dates). Fall seasons typically run from August 30 through November, concurrent with big game seasons. Both spot-and-stalk and hound hunting are legal in Idaho.
