Mountain Lion

Mountain lions (also called cougars or pumas) are Idaho's apex predator. These elusive cats are rarely seen but widely distributed across the state. Idaho offers both hunting and hound hunting opportunities for mountain lions, with a healthy population estimated at 2,000-3,000 animals.

Habitat & Range

Mountain lions occupy virtually all of Idaho's mountainous terrain, from the Panhandle to the Owyhee desert. They follow deer and elk populations, prefer rocky, rugged terrain with good cover. Lions are most common in the Clearwater, Salmon River breaks, and central Idaho wilderness.

Seasons & Tag Types

Mountain lion seasons run from August 30 through March 31 in most units. Both hound hunting (September-March) and spot-and-stalk hunting are legal. Some units have quota limits. Hunters must check harvest with IDFG within 24 hours.

Field Tactics

• Hound hunting is the most effective method—hire an outfitter if inexperienced
• Look for fresh tracks in snow for spot-and-stalk opportunities
• Lions are most active at dawn and dusk
• Hunt areas with high deer/elk populations
• Glass rocky outcrops and rim edges where lions sun themselves

Gear Worth Carrying

• Flat-shooting rifle (.243, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270, etc.)
• Quality binoculars for glassing
• GPS for backcountry navigation
• Snow tracking skills (or hire a guide with hounds)
