Drive to the massive Grandad Bridge spanning the Dworshak Reservoir. Remote, winding logging roads requiring attentiveness. Great fishing access.

When to go: Summer and Fall typically offer the best window.

Status: Seasonal. Seasonal routes change with snowpack and storms — confirm with the managing ranger district before driving out.

Vehicles: Truck, SUV. Standard offroad prep applies: appropriate tires, ground clearance, and a basic recovery kit.

Clearwater context

The Clearwater region holds some of the largest western redcedar groves in interior North America. Dworshak Reservoir and the Lolo Motorway — a 100-mile dirt traverse retracing Lewis and Clark — are the marquee drives. Orofino, Kamiah, and Lowell are the staging points.

Best for drivers who understand their vehicle and the cost of a mistake in remote country.
