Open Offroad MapSoutheast Idaho sits along the Wyoming border, anchored by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Bear Lake. It's a smaller, quieter off-road region than the Panhandle or Central Mountains — long forest arterials through the Montpelier and Soda Springs Ranger Districts rather than a dense network of marquee trails, with routes that often cross into western Wyoming.
Crow Creek Road is the region's documented route so far: a long arterial through the Montpelier Ranger District that, run end to end, crosses the state line from Montpelier Reservoir into Afton, Wyoming. Camping options along the way are limited — the reservoir campground, a handful of sites near Giveout Camp roughly six miles in, and a few more near the final spurs.
This is high-elevation Caribou-Targhee terrain, so expect a shorter season than the desert regions to the west — routes are typically drivable from June through October. Montpelier and Soda Springs are the practical staging points; cell coverage thins out quickly once you're off Highway 89.
