The Panhandle is closer to Spokane and Missoula than to Boise, and it shows: dense cedar and hemlock forests, big inland lakes, and a maritime-influenced climate that makes this Idaho's wettest region. The Idaho Panhandle National Forests — Coeur d'Alene, Kaniksu, and St. Joe combined — cover most of the public-land off-road opportunities, with mining-era roads still woven through the upper drainages.
Priest Lake and the Selkirk Crest are the marquee destinations: Upper Priest, Hughes Meadows, and the long climb to Roosevelt Grove. South of I-90, the St. Joe River corridor offers some of the best easy-to-moderate scenic driving in the state, with Marble Creek and Hobo Pass linking back toward the Bitterroots. Silver Valley mining roads above Wallace and Mullan offer the most concentrated network — short loops, big history, and several drive-up summit lookouts.
The Panhandle's season is shorter and wetter than southern Idaho. Many roads stay muddy into June; major passes can hold snow into July. By contrast, fall stays drivable later than the Sawtooths because elevations are lower. Sandpoint, Coeur d'Alene, St. Maries, and Wallace are practical bases, and unlike the central wilderness, cell service returns to most ridgelines.
