Central Idaho holds the largest contiguous wilderness in the Lower 48 — the Frank Church-River of No Return — flanked by the Selway-Bitterroot, Sawtooths, and White Cloud Peaks. Roads here are not shortcuts; they are destinations. The Magruder Corridor between Elk City and Darby, Montana is the only road that splits the Frank Church and Selway-Bitterroot, and traversing it remains one of the defining off-road journeys in North America.
From Stanley, the Custer Motorway and the Yankee Fork loop reveal old gold-dredge country and high-elevation lakes. The Loon Creek and Big Creek roads thread along the Frank Church boundary, and the Lolo Motorway in the northern half retraces the Lewis and Clark crossing. None of these are technically extreme, but they are committing — long, slow, and often a full day from any pavement.
Most through-routes don't fully open until July and start closing with first snow in October. A central rule applies everywhere here: you are likely days from outside help. Spare fuel, spare tire (full size), redundant water, and printed maps are not optional. SPOT or inReach communicators are standard practice. McCall, Stanley, Salmon, and Elk City are the staging towns — pick one, plan your loop from it, and keep your route conservative on first visits.
