Lake Cascade

27,151-acre reservoir that's gained national fame for trophy Yellow Perch. Revival 'succeeded beyond optimistic expectations' - now routinely produces 2-pound jumbo perch and has set multiple state/world records. A national ice fishing destination. Also rainbow trout, coho, and tiger muskie.

Species: Yellow Perch, Rainbow Trout, Coho Salmon, Tiger Muskie, Smallmouth Bass. Difficulty: beginner. Approachable for first-timers and families.

Best timing: Summer and Winter. Summer fishes best at first light and late evening; midday is technical. Winter access is for dedicated anglers; ice conditions vary year to year.

Southwest Idaho is the most accessible fishing in the state — the Boise River runs through downtown stocked with rainbows, and Lake Cascade and C.J. Strike are short drives for bass, perch, and walleye. The South Fork of the Boise tailwater and the Owyhee River provide higher-quality trout fishing within a couple hours of Boise. Boise, Nampa, and McCall are the staging towns.
