Ashton Reservoir

A scenic 400-acre reservoir on the Henry's Fork, known for rainbow trout and home to the Idaho state record brown trout. Fish from the dock at the access site, from shore, or from watercraft. Heavy annual stocking of catchable rainbow trout.

Species: Yellow Perch, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout. Difficulty: beginner. Approachable for first-timers and families.

Best timing: Spring and Summer and Fall. Spring fishing keys on warming water and emerging insects. Summer fishes best at first light and late evening; midday is technical. Fall is prime — heavy feeding before winter, fewer crowds.

Upper Snake context

The Upper Snake encompasses the major tailwaters east of the Tetons — Palisades, Henrys Fork, and Falls River. This is technical dry-fly water; multiple guide outfits work it year-round. Cutthroat, brown trout, and strong rainbow populations dominate. Idaho Falls, Rexburg, and Driggs are the bases.
