How to Read Idaho Fish Stocking Reports
Learn how Idaho stocking schedules and historical reports differ, what their dates mean, and what to check before fishing.
An Idaho stocking schedule is a plan; a historical stocking record describes a reported release. Neither tells you whether fish are biting today. Use both as starting points, then check current regulations, conditions and legal access before your trip.
Start with the right kind of record
Idaho Fish and Game's statewide stocking forecasts describe planned work. The agency says stocking is tentative and dates can change with conditions, weather or staffing. On October 31, 2026, the forecast page returned an error in our check; availability can change. Treat a forecast as a reason to check back, not a guarantee that fish were released on a particular day.
The agency's historical stocking records can be filtered by water. The table identifies the water, species, quantity, general size and reported date. Compare the exact water name and location before using a record: similar names do not necessarily describe the same place.
Read the date and size together
A recent entry can help you understand what was reported, but an older record is not proof of a recent release. The agency uses general size categories, including fry, fingerling and catchable; check the category alongside the species and quantity. A large number of small fish is different information from a release of larger fish.
If you use Roam Idaho's fishing guides, check the date and label on any stocking snapshot. A missing entry does not prove a water has never been stocked. Records can lag or be incomplete, and our copy is not a live guarantee of the agency's latest data.
Check the trip details separately
- Find the water and region in the latest official fishing rules, including water-specific exceptions and any later updates.
- Check the agency's information page or contact its regional office if a rule, closure or report is unavailable: Idaho Fish and Game.
- Confirm that the access point is open and public, and check weather and water conditions before leaving.
- Bring the required license and permits; use the official licensing service to check your account and eligibility.
Stocking information is one planning tool, not a catch forecast, access permit or substitute for current rules. Roam Idaho is independent of Idaho Fish and Game.
