Broadhead Tuning Basics
Idaho outdoor intelligence and field strategy from Roam Idaho.
August 1st is too late to screw on a broadhead. Fixed blade broadheads steer the arrow from the front. If your bow isn't perfectly tuned, they will plane off course. Here is the process.
Paper Tuning First
Before you touch a broadhead, get a bullet hole through paper with a field point at 6 feet. If your arrow is coming out of the bow sideways, a broadhead will just magnify that error.
Broadhead Tuning (Walk Back)
- Shoot a field point at 20 yards.
- Shoot a broadhead at 20 yards.
- Chase the Field Point with the Rest.
- If broadhead hits LEFT of field point -> Move rest RIGHT (very small increments).
- If broadhead hits RIGHT of field point -> Move rest LEFT.
- If broadhead hits LOW -> Move rest UP.
When they group together at 20, move back to 40, then 60. When you can stack a fixed blade and a field point in the vitals at 60 yards, you are ready for the mountains.
